MONTREAL (CityNews) – Emergency work is being done to prevent concrete beams and slabs from collapsing on the Pie-IX metro station, but the Régie des installations olympiques assures that there is no risk to users.
The problematic beams support slabs of the sidewalk bordering Pierre-de-Coubertin, as well as the former administrative offices of the Olympic Park, behind the main entrance to the metro station.
Workers from the STM discovered the damage over the spring, while excavating. The public transit company is carrying out major work in the area, sealing and expanding the metro station, as well as water and sewers on Pie-IX and Pierre-de-Coubertin.
A detailed evaluation was carried out and the work is underway. It’s expected to last until September.
The Pie-IX metro station was opened in 1976 and according to STM data from 2019, sees almost 19,000 users a week.
