On the campaign trail: Money promised to help support small private art venues

MONTREAL (CityNews) – On the municipal campaign trail Monday, Mayor Valérie Plante promised $1 million per year to help support small private art venues and neighbourhood cinemas if Project Montreal is reelected.
Plante unveiled her plans for Montreal’s cultural scene at Théâtre aux Écuries in Villeray, saying that the pandemic has hit the sector hard and it needs to be a key part of the city’s economic recovery.
Among the measures announced, support for soundproofing to facilitate cohabitation within the neighborhood and helping with the creation of new artist studios.
$12 million is also planned for the Maison de la chanson francophone in the Saint-Sulpice library.
Ensemble Montréal leader Denis Coderre also making promises for the cultural sector, saying it’s imperative to protect artists and give them the tools to be creative.
Coderre looking to fund a program that would get its funding from taxing billboards, similar to a program in Toronto that generates $10 million yearly.
The party also wants to accelerate the transformation of the Saint-Sulpice library, light up giant murals and create a festival around public pianos.
