The city of Longueuil will cull at least 70 deer at Michel-Chartrand park as a way to battle overpopulation.
BACKGROUND: Citizens of city south of Montreal protest plan to cull half the deer in city park
A report recommending it s the best way to balance the ecosystem and ensure long-term preservation of the urban park.
And the meat will be donated to local food banks.
The deer were originally set to be culled in November 2020, but the suggestion was met with widespread outrage, with some officials receiving death threats.
The current recommendation is part of a report by a committee, composed of local residents, environmental organizations, university and government experts who conducted work in the field and met with numerous others.
They found the park constituted a fragile and at-risk ecosystem – that the natural environments of Michel-Chartrand park are so degraded that they can no longer regenerate, adding that visitors to the park often don’t comply with regulations to protect the environment.
In total, 30 recommendations were made – the city of Longueuil promising more than 17 million dollars over the next three years to support the preservation of the park.
