Dawson College asks to be treated equitably by government

“We ask to be treated equitably,” says Diane Gauvin, Dawson College’s director on Quebec’s decision to cancel the school’s expansion plan - favouring financing French CEGEPS instead. Pamela Pagano reports.

With its expansion plans abruptly cancelled by the provincial government, Dawson College administrators held a press conference Thursday to present their case.

The $100-million dollar expansion project had been promised to rectify major space shortages that have severely affected the quality of education offered for the past 25 years.

It’s now been shelved in favour of more financing for French CEGEPS.

Diane Gauvin, the director general of the English-language school, says it’s a question of equitable treatment.

“Well, the facts show that we have a need […} and in the last few weeks, the situation has completely changed while the environment and the facts have not. Clearly, it appears to be a political decision.”

Students affected negatively by lack of space

A nursing simulation room placed in a closet due to lack of space was one example offered by the college as the negative impacts of the space deficit.

The promised expansion was meant to meet the Quebec Education Ministry’s standards.

“The expansion is not meant to create room for more students,” said chair of the board, Michael Goldwax, “but to offer space to the current student population.”

Dawson says a final decision has not been made by the government and is asking to meet with Quebec’s Education Ministry directly.
