A modernization and expansion project is promising to bring the more than 100-year-old Lachine Hospital into the 21st century.
Construction on the two-phase project is set to begin in May, with completion expected in 2025.
The McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) says the estimated $223-million project will make the hospital modern and include state-of-the-art facilities.
The expansion project will add more single-patient rooms and new operating rooms.
The new portion will be built on the south side of the hospital along St-Antoine Street, facing LaSalle Park. It will house the emergency room, ICU and other units.
The original building will also see renovations to bring it up to today’s standards, officials say.
Lachine Hospital dealing with staffing shortages
The hospital is currently dealing with a staff shortage that forced the partial closure of its ER in November. The ICU remains shut.
As of Monday, ambulances can now transport patients to Lachine’s emergency room between 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., seven days a week.
In a previous statement, the MUHC said it’s actively working to recruit respiratory therapists and nurses to help fully restore its services.
Project called HOP LACHINE!
The new modernization of the Lachine Hospital is being carried out in partnership with the Ministère de la Santé et des Services sociaux (MSSS) and the Société québécoise des infrastructures (SQI). The project is being called ‘HOP LACHINE! – A Patient-Focused Hospital.’
“The community of Lachine is proud of its community hospital and it is with great emotion and happiness that we welcome this important investment by the Quebec government,” said Maja Vodanovic, the mayor of Lachine. “In the future modern facilities, our doctors and healthcare personnel will be able to contribute more to the health and well-being of our citizens.
We look forward to the spring to celebrate the start of the long awaited and much needed construction.”
Added Marc Doret, mayor of Dorval: “When I learned of the scope of the renovation project planned for this building, I was extremely pleased to see the concerted effort to preserve its unique character. The improvement of its many services will be greatly appreciated by the residents of Dorval, Lachine and the surrounding communities.”
