As part of the 2022 spring flood prevention campaign, the borough of Pierrefonds-Roxboro is sending officials – including mayor Dimitrios ‘Jim’ Beis – door-to-door to raise residents’ awareness about the necessity and responsibility to prepare for the spring flood season with the nearby Rivière-des-Prairies.
After the 2017 and 2019 floods, the borough explains it learned a lot about what to do, sector by sector, and they want to make sure residents are prepared for any future flooding.
#WATCH: “We visit residents in the vulnerable areas, like this one here in the Pierrefonds west sector, and we advise them on what to do in a preventive way in the event we have floods,” explained Pierrefonds-Roxboro mayor Dimitrios Jim Beis.⁰

“We were affected twice in the last five years with historic floods and this could happen at anytime and in order for us to move forward as a community, aside from protecting the community itself is to give the tools to the individual residents as well and have them understand what their role and responsibilities are in protecting their homes as well and so this is why we’re there today,” said Beis.
In collaboration with the fire and police departments, Pierrefonds-Roxboro is distributing educational resources, a booklet they put together after 2017 floods that is now being used by many other communities across Quebec. It has information on what to do before, after, and during a flood – and resources.
“We visit residents in the vulnerable areas, like this one here in the Pierrefonds west sector, and we advise them on what to do in a preventive way in the event we have floods in order for them to be ready and have a 72-hour kit ready in advance,” explained Beis. “And also steps to take to prepare themselves and to protect their homes before any flood may occur. This is something we’ve done in the last five years and it allows us to reassure the residents not only to give them the tools to protect themselves, but also to know that the authorities and the city is there for them and we will do whatever we can to protect them in a crisis management way – the way we’ve done in the last number of years.”
