CAQ wins Marie-Victorin by-election, takes PQ stronghold

The CAQ took the Marie-Victorin by-election on Monday night. The riding, a long-time PQ stronghold on Montreal’s South Shore, will now be represented in the National Assembly by Shirley Dorismond. She is a nurse and former union vice-president.
Dorismond had close to 35 per cent of the votes as of 10 p.m. to solidify the win for Premier Legault and his government – ahead of the Oct. 3 planned general provincial election.
The Parti Québécois’ Pierre Nantel came in second. The former NDP and Bloc MP in the area getting more than 30 per cent of the ballots and the party confirming that he will run again in October.
This is only the second time in its history that the riding of Marie-Victorin will not be represented by the PQ.
Québec solidaire finished third, the Quebec Conservative Party fourth, and the Liberals fifth with almost seven per cent of the votes.

Over 45,000 electors were eligible to vote in the by-election. Élections Québec reporting 16,144 ballots were cast for a 36.40 per cent voter turnout according to the data at 10 p.m.
The by-election was to replace the seat of former independent MNA Catherine Fournier, elected mayor of Longueuil in Nov. 2021.
