After the pandemic forced two years of cancellations, delays, and outdoor ceremonies – it’s the class of 2022 that’s sparking prom back up again.
“This is prom 2022,” yells a group of students.
“In the last two years they’ve remained positive,” said Cristina Celzi, principal of Laurier Macdonald High School (LMAC). “They’ve done their work, they’ve done what they had to do to get here.”
LMAC students, teachers, and staff filled the Salle de Réception Le Classique in Montreal’s Saint-Leonard borough at their prom on Thursday. Smiles, music, and dancing also filled the hall.
“For them, it’s obviously a rite of passage, a celebration,” added Celzi.
Students React
“I thought the pandemic was still going to take over,” said one student. “I’m very excited because we’re the first class back that we can celebrate that we have finished high school.”
“I hope to look back on this in years and think it was awesome,” said another.
“Especially with COVID, glad we like get to have a prom with like the circumstances.”
“You get to see everyone dress their best, everyone doing their best and, you know, have a nice time.”
“This is definitely a moment to celebrate, it’s the end of their high school life” said Sonia Manago, teacher at LMAC. “Teachers, students, we celebrate together.”
“It’s a closure to an amazing five years of our lives,” she added.
“It’s an amazing moment, I’m so glad it’s back,” said Manago.
“It’s a way to make memories for your friends for one last time,” added a student.
“I remember my prom,” said Celzi. “I hope they have as much fun as I did.”
