In a triumphant finish to one of Montreal’s most renowned festivals, the Roots wrapped up the International Jazz Fest Saturday night with an electric outdoor show.
Thousands packed into the Quartier des Spectacles on a slightly chilly July night to watch the legendary band put an exclamation mark on the 42nd Montreal Jazz Festival.
Being in Montreal was extremely special for the band, Ray Angry of the Roots told CityNews.
“It’s a pleasure being here in Montreal with the Roots and to perform for the people,” said the keyboard player, composer and producer.
“It’s my first time performing outside of the U.S. since the pandemic happened. So this is a real treat. Montreal, I love you guys.”
The list of accolades is long for Ray Angry and the Roots.
The musician has worked with big-name stars like Amy Schumer, Mick Jagger and Christina Aguilera. And of course the Roots are the house band for The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
And there’s much more on the horizon for the artist who humbly says he’s merely “keeping busy.”
“I have a couple of things going on,” he said. “I have Producer Mondays. We have a single that we’re planning on releasing called Interplanetary Love. It’s incredible. I’m so excited about this and I’m getting ready to release it.
“I started my own record label called Mister Goldfinger Music, and currently working on that. And also I have a symphony that I’m working on called Black Athena. There’s a couple of films. And then Inside Amy Schumer, season five, working on that right now.”
Ray Angry also has a solo piano album coming out soon.
