Severe thunderstorm watch for Montreal area

Showers or thunderstorms expected for Montreal and the surrounding areas Tuesday – with 15 to 25 mm possible. High of 24, but feeling like 33 with the humidex.

Environment Canada issuing a severe thunderstorm watch for:

  • Châteauguay – La Prairie area
  • Laval area
  • Longueuil – Varennes area
  • Montreal area

“This afternoon, conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms capable of producing strong gusts, large hail and heavy rain,” says the weather agency on its website.

Adding that: strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles. Intense lightning is likely with any thunderstorm that develops. Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Water-related activities may be unsafe due to violent and sudden gusts of wind over bodies of water.

Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall.

For tonight, a few showers ending this evening, then clearing. Low of 17.
