Quebec Coroner launches public inquiry into three random shooting deaths in Montreal

Quebec’s Chief Coroner has ordered the launch of a public inquiry to shed light on the deaths of André Lemieux, Mohamed Belhaj and Alex Lévis-Crevier, murdered last week in three random shootings in 24 hours in Montreal and Laval.

The suspected shooter, 26-year-old Abdulla Shaikh, was shot dead by Montreal police August 4  in a motel parking lot during an operation linked to the three killings.

Shaikh, who was known to have mental health issues, allegedly targeted the three men at random in St. Laurent, Ahuntsic and Laval. All three were shot at close range and pronounced dead on scene.

The coroner’s investigation will be presided over by Gehane Kamel and will allow anyone of interest to the cases to talk about the circumstances of these deaths, in order to analyze all of the contributing factors.
