Sun Youth looking for donations of backpacks, lunch boxes as supply-chain issues impact back-to-school

Sun Youth says it is facing even more pressure this year to help lower-income families prepare for back-to-school.

That’s because demand is very high, inflation is taking its toll on families and community organizations, and supply-chain issues are making it difficult to secure supplies.

Every August, the organization distributes school supplies and clothes to students in need.

Usually, registration is open from June to August. This year, Sun Youth says demand was so high that registration for 1,000 students was complete by the end of July.

“It’s not just families who rely on Sun Youth’s help,” the group said in a statement. “The organization’s help is also very popular with schools. The organization usually helps another thousand children referred directly by schools after the start of the school year.”

Sun Youth says while cash donations are welcome, supply-chain issues are making it difficult to obtain certain items.

That’s why this year they’re hoping to receive the following new or used school items as donations:

  • Backpacks
  • Duotangs (with and without pockets)
  • Large washable felt pens
  • Canada Notebooks
  • Lunch boxes
  • Binders (1 inch & 2 inch)
  • Gridded Canada Workbooks
  • Separators
  • Loose-leaf packages

Last year, Sun Youth says it distributed 1,391 school bags and new clothes to children – totalling $87,549.
