‘Montreal remains a secure city’: Mayor Plante reassures population after two shootings in 30 minutes

Montreal Mayor Valerie Plante on Wednesday reassuring the population that the city is still safe place, after two  men were shot on Tuesday afternoon, within 30 minutes of each other, both dying later in hospital.

the first shooting occurred in the parking lot of the Rockland shopping centre in Town of Mount Royal. 

A 44-year-old man – known to authorities – with ties to biker gangs.

Then at Pizzeria Napoli in the quartier Latin, about 8 kilometers from the first scene, a 50-year-old shot.

Police can’t confirm whether the shootings are connected.

“Montreal will not become a criminal’s playground,” Plante said.

Plante called the situation preoccupying and says the city is working with all levels of government.

“Montreal, as the metropolis of the province of Quebec, needs to have the appropriate resources,” said Plante. “Financial resources so we can act properly and I’m glad that the Premier has heard my call and as we were talking this morning and wants to make more resources available and as for the Prime Minister Justin Trudeau I did share with him my concerns and how it has to be more than a freeze of handguns.”

The mayor said they’ll be working on more prevention and recruiting police officers.
