SPVM deploying 68 officers dedicated to fighting armed violence

By News Staff

Early next month Montreal police will deploy a large-scale force entirely dedicated to the fight against armed violence.

It’s all part of the ‘ARRET project,’ an acronym of Action, Repression, Resolution, Engagement and Field – or terrain in French.

The objective is to increase the pressure on the criminal elements behind violent events in order to improve citizens’ sense of security.

This project will bring together 68 police officers with a variety of expertise “that can be deployed throughout Montreal where action against gun violence must be taken,” the SPVM said in a release.

“Its mission will be to disrupt the activities of violent criminal groups by occupying the field, gathering intelligence and intervening directly with their members.”

As of Aug. 26, Montreal police also added a temporary increase in the resources and manpower allocated to the ECLIPSE squad.

“The ARRET project, which will last for an indefinite period of time, will allow the SPVM to intensify its presence on the ground,” the release continued. “This initiative is part of the action plan adopted by the service in the fall of 2021 to address the issue of gun violence.”
