Violent 24 hours in Montreal: four shootings & student attacked

A busy night for Montreal police (SPVM), as officers responded to four shootings – three people injured.

The first incident, around 8 p.m., officers called for shots fired near a schoolyard in Anjou, close to Avenue des Jalesnes and Galeries d’Anjou Blvd.

No victims or suspects were located, but bullet casings and  a damaged vehicle were found at the scene.

Two shootings 30 minutes apart

Then, around midnight at Place Émilie-Gamelin, a 38-year-old was found with upper body injuries.

Authorities report that witnesses saw at least one suspect flee the scene.

Thirty minutes later, another 911 call about shots fired on 31st Ave., near Beaubien east in Rosemont-la-Petite-Patrie.

SPVM found several projectile impacts on a parked vehicle and shell casings on the ground.

In this case, no victim was located.

Two arrests made in one case

The fourth event, gunfire at 2 a.m. on Saint-Denis, near de Maisonneuve Blvd.

A 32-year-old man with injuries to the upper body and a 26-year-old hit in the lower body. Both remain in stable condition in hospital.

Two arrests made, a 34 and 47-year-old, both men known to police.

It’s unclear what the relationship between the suspects and the victims is as of yet.

Young man possible attacked at Collège de Maisonneuve

Earlier Monday, an 18-year-old man was injured after he was assaulted around 3 p.m. with a weapon inside Collège de Maisonneuve – on Sherbrooke, in the Mercier-Hochelaga-Maisonneuve borough.

It’s still unclear what exactly the weapon was or the circumstances around the event, but it seems to have stemmed from a fight.

Police arrested three men, ages 17, 18 and 19, in connection with the assault.

Officer found the victim with upper body injuries. He was transported to hospital, but authorities do not fear for his life.

An investigation is ongoing.

Mayor says ‘it’s unacceptable’

Mayor Valérie Plante tweeting on Tuesday: “Violence is always unacceptable. But when it touches our young people, our hearts sink even tighter. This is why we will soon unveil a multidisciplinary team project, formed by the SPVM and civilians, dedicated to ensuring safety in our schools.”
