Laval group bringing new thrills to haunted houses

"We're trying to bring a new twist to horror," says Jonathan Driscoll, president of Escaparium whose team puts together the Nights of Terror experience every weekend in October, a haunted house with a story. Pamela Pagano reports.

Halloween is right around the corner and in Laval, just north of Montreal, Escaparium is taking fright, scares, and terror seriously every weekend this month with their immersive haunted house.

“We’re trying to bring a new twist to horror, haunted houses,” said Jonathan Driscoll, president of Escaparium. “To put it short, you’re just going into a young girl’s nightmares that she’s having.”

It’s the second edition of the haunted house, after being on pause for two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Nights of Terror experience takes about 35 minutes to get through the 15,000-square foot space, which is filled with about 47 actors whose treat is to trick you in their close to 25 scenes.

“Every scene lasts for about a minute 15, so you go from one scene to the other,” said Driscoll. “You feel like you’re part of a movie.”

Their most popular spooktacular evening: Saturday nights.

The Escaparium team recommends you visit Fridays or Sundays for an equally fang-tastic evening. However, does warn it may be too intense for children under 16.

CityNews spoke to some scare-goers that had been waiting in line for a couple hours.

“I’m not easily scared, but I heard this place is, it’s pretty interesting,” said Charlie Williams.

Zain Khan saying, “I’m petrified. I was brought here against my will. It’s not what I wanted to do on a Saturday night.”

The spine-chilling experience feels exclusive. The timed scenes, opening and slamming of doors allows one to not see other groups, giving the illusion you and your friends are in the nightmare alone.

“They’re really talented and it really shows in there,” said Driscoll. “So if you want to get blown away, come and see us.”
