Quebec nurses launch campaign against sexy Halloween costumes

If you’re thinking of dressing up as a “sexy nurse” for Halloween, the Quebec Order of Nurses says think again.

As Halloween approaches they have launched a campaign to fight the “sexy nurse” stereotype.

The Ordre des infirmières et infirmiers du Quebec says in a news release that the sexual objectification of nurses devalues their profession and expertise.

The order’s president, Luc Mathieu, says stereotypes regarding nurses persist, even though the profession has evolved.

He calls the nurse costumes sold in retail stores “scary” and says nursing deserves respect as a scientific profession.

The campaign aims to sensitize people about how nurses are portrayed and to change that perception by presenting a realistic image of the profession.

In the video they created, they encourage those who want to dress up as a nurse, to choose a “real nurse’s costume”, saying the sexualization of the profession is unacceptable and their expertise needs to be valued.

The commercial ends with the words in French, “ Les infirmières et infirmiers soignent notre monde. Soignons leur image”, which translates to “nurses heal our people, let’s heal their image.”
