The search operation for a missing infant in the Rivière des Mille-Îles resumed Saturday morning.
The baby was in a vehicle with his mother and four-year-old sister when it plunged into the water late Friday afternoon.
Police still have some hope that the baby will be found alive.
“Of course, we have a little hope,” Service de police de Laval (SPL) spokesperson Erika Landry told The Canadian Press in an interview Saturday.
“Unfortunately, the time is against us, the more time passes, the more the chances go down.”
The mother, who is 40 years old, and the sister were rescued by emergency personnel and taken to hospital.
Landry says the current may have carried the boy several kilometres.
People who live along the Rivière des Mille-Îles, which divides Laval from the mainland to the north and east, are being asked to look for him along the riverbanks.
After searching the waters of the river for several hours on Friday evening, Laval firefighters had to suspend their search due to darkness.
The operation resumed Saturday morning with the help of divers from the Sûreté du Québec and a helicopter.
Landry says a call first came in about a vehicle partly submerged in the river around 4:45 p.m.
Police and firefighters converged on Des Érables Street near Saint-Antoine Street, where they rescued the mother and the sister.
The woman remains in hospital, while the four-year-old was released Friday evening.
Police are continuing their investigation to try to figure out how the vehicle ended up in the water. Violent crime investigators will meet with the mother when she is able.
