Denis Coderre tops poll for Quebec Liberal Party leadership: Léger

By CityNews Staff

A new Léger poll shows that former Montreal mayor Denis Coderre seems to be a standout for the Quebec Liberal Party leadership, but there is no clear choice yet.

The Léger-Le Journal-TVA-QUB poll, was conducted Nov. 4 to 6, before Dominique Anglade resigned – among 1,028 Quebec voters.

Nearly one in five Liberal supporters (17 per cent) feel Coderre would be the best person to replace Anglade.

Also on the list, former Liberal ministers Gaétan Barrette and Pierre Moreau – each with four per cent support. Hydro-Québec CEO Sophie Brochu and Liberal MNA Marwah Rizky with three per cent.

All, but Moreau, have already closed the door to the idea though.

Former interim leader Pierre Arcand, who did not seek re-election on Oct. 3, garnered two per cent, while Marc Tanguay, Alexandre Cusson and François-Philippe Champagne, the Canadian Minister of Innovation, received one per cent support.

Two-thirds of the respondents refused to make a choice among the choices proposed.

The Léger poll shows the field is wide open.

Even before Dominique Anglade confirmed her departure, almost one in two Quebecers (46 per cent) preferred that she leave, a wish shared by barely a quarter (24 per cent) of Liberal supporters.

In contrast, 55 per cent of Liberal respondents wanted her to remain as leader.

METHODOLOGY: Survey of 1,028 Quebec voters randomly recruited using LEO’s online panel. The data was collected from November 4 to 6, 2022. It is not possible to calculate a margin of error on a sample drawn from a panel, but for comparison purposes, the maximum margin of error for a sample of 1,028 respondents is ± 3.1%, 19 times out of 20.
