In July, CityNews first spoke with Muscari after she was approved for a potentially life-saving trial Texas.
At the time she said, “It feels great to know that I am the first Canadian that will try this trial and if it works on me, then they will bring it to Canada and save a bunch of other people which is such an amazing feeling.”

In early October, Muscari and her mother travelled to Texas to begin the treatment.
While in Texas, she was intubated for nearly a month. She had a collapsed lung, pneumonia, and her kidneys began to fail. As a result, Muscari was admitted into ICU.
In early November, the family learned the trial was not successful.
“So what showed on the CT scan were new masses, bigger masses. It had taken over her whole lungs. Unfortunately, we were told that we will not be continuing to cycle two and Maria basically is being brought home or to bring Maria home, as per M.D. Anderson for end-of-life treatment,” explained Rick Kidder, Muscari’s stepfather.
The family is still fundraising to cover the medical expense related to Maria’s time spent in Texas.

Maria Muscaria was 23-years-old.
