Montreal’s MUHC’s Got Talent fundraiser

“I'm very excited,” says Dr. Matthias Friedrich, cardiologist at the MUHC who is among many health care heroes showcasing their talents at Montreal’s MUHC’s Got Talent fundraiser. Pamela Pagano reports.

Health care professionals are stepping out of the clinic and onto the stage for MUCH’s Got Talent, performing Wednesday evening to help fundraise for different projects and programs at the McGill University Health Centre.

“Each person on stage is a hospital hero, is a friend of a hospital hero,” said Julie Quenneville, President and CEO of the MUHC Foundation. “And is here for a good cause.”

Causes close to their hearts, from cardiology to emergency care.

Every $1 donation = 1 vote. And the Foundation will award multiple prizes, which will benefit each winner’s cause:

Like $15,000 for the fan favourite, who has the highest number of unique donors.

“It’s a wonderful way for patients and staff to work together towards a common goal of fundraising,” said Quenneville. “For the most urgent needs of the hospital.”

Rehearsals took place Tuesday evening at Montreal’s Corona Theatre, which will be filled with hundreds of spectators tomorrow.

“I’m very excited and anxious,” said Dr. Matthias Friedrich, cardiologist at the MUHC, with his guitar in hand ready to rehearse his performance.

“I don’t know whether it’s a talent, because talent sounds like a big thing,” he explained. “I have a thing for music, music is my go to place whenever I’m happy or sad.”

Also performing on behalf of MUHC doctors, students from three schools – like the John Rennie Glee Team.

They’re raising funds for ovarian and endometrial cancer research.

“It’s a great thing for us to use our voices, which not many people have, to do something amazing,” said Victoria D’Elia, grade 10 student at John Rennie High School.

“It honestly makes us feel good,” added Meaghan McCracken, grade 11 student.

The evening will be filled with heartwarming performances, talent, and a panel of celebrity judges.

This inaugural year of the event has already raised over $400,000.

“It reminds us of the incredible community of support around the MUHC,” said Quenneville.

“We will have a performance that hopefully will be entertaining,” added Dr. Friedrich. “And hopefully also helps raise some funds for the research.”
