Montreal’s LaurenHill Academy unveils newly renovated pool

“Hopefully every student at LaurenHill Academy will learn to swim,” says the school’s principal Donna Manos about its new swimming facility. Brittany Henriques reports.

On Friday, Montreal’s LaurenHill Academy high school gathered students and staff to inaugurate its newly renovated pool.

The English Montreal School Board (EMSB) allocated $1,914,007 for the project located in the school’s St-Laurent junior campus.

Students will get to enjoy a new swimming pool and locker rooms during gym class and other activities.

Liberal MP for St-Laurent Emmanuella Lambropoulos joined students and staff to unveil the highly anticipated project.

Children will get to use the pool during ‘lunch-hour free swimming’ year-round, and weekly swim team practice in addition to gym classes. Julie Ramundo, a physical education teacher at the school, says getting students in the pool is not just about introducing them to new, fun ways of staying active but also about safety.

Regardless of experience, students are taught the basics of swimming once a week for two months. The gym classes also include innertube water polo, synchronized swimming, dragon boat paddling, and underwater hockey.

The academy also has a swim team taught by the school’s lifeguard and swimming teacher.

13-year-old swimmer Emmanual Vlakos says he’s excited about the new pool, which will allow him to practice his swimming in a better facility.
