Snow coming down in Montreal and surrounding areas

The snow started coming down in Montreal after 7 a.m. on Friday morning. The surrounding areas seeing flurries a little earlier and heavier.

Environment Canada forecasting it as the first snowstorm of the season for southwestern Quebec, with 15 to 20 cm expected to fall by Saturday afternoon.

“I clean the snow for the entrances of the driveways, the entrances to come in,” said Tony Crispo, a Montreal landlord. “Some of my tenants, I help them out while they’re probably working or they’re out.”

Many took to the streets Friday afternoon, removing the snow.

Crispo one of them, as a good samaritan, clearing the driveway of the neighbouring building as he took care of his own properties.

“Winter over here is one of the best,” he added.

Snowfall warning still in effect for:

  • Châteauguay – La Prairie area
  • Laval area
  • Longueuil – Varennes area
  • Montreal Island area

“When you’re a kid, it’s fun,” said Montrealer, Stanley Rebernak, on the snowfall as he shoveled. “As you get older, it’s a little more annoying.”

“I’m getting a head start,” added Gerlanda Bentivegna, also shoveling snow before it accumulates.

Temperatures will hover around the freezing mark and winds will also pick up as the system moves in.

More periods of snow could be seen on Sunday as well.

“I have no power to change the weather,” said Montrealer, Sony Dorelien. “I have no choice to accept to love the snow.”

Temperatures will also take a dip next week for the Montreal-area, high of 1 degree on Monday, but then -1 on Tuesday and -3 on Wednesday, but sun and clouds for all three days.

The City of Montreal reminding drivers that there are almost 8,000 free parking spaces, most of which are available at night, to the public. To find out where these spaces are located, people are invited to visit montreal.ca/snow-removal.

The Mobility Squad is joining the snow removal operations to clear the streets and sidewalks so that the snow removal equipment is not delayed by obstructions.

Winter in Montreal means:

– 6,550 km of sidewalks and 4,100 km of roadways to be cleared of snow;

– an average of five snow loading operations per winter;

– approximately 3,000 employees, at the height of a snow loading operation;

– approximately 2,200 pieces of equipment on the road.

“Citizens contribute to the efficiency and speed of snow removal by clearing streets and sidewalks, parking their vehicles properly and using free parking spaces during snow loading operations. Everyone’s cooperation is greatly appreciated,” said the city in a press release.

“Just wishing everybody a Happy holidays,” said Bentivegna.

“Wish everybody a Merry Christmas and a better new year,” added Rebernak.

“Let’s just hope we’re all healthy,” said Crispo. “That’s the most important.”
