Montrealers protest violent crackdown in Iran, execution of prisoner

The Iranian community of Montreal came together Saturday at Square Philips to echo the voices of those protesting in Iran, following recent executions and violent crackdowns on pro-democracy voices by the Iranian regime.

Montreal’s Iranian community held another protest downtown Saturday in a show of solidarity for pro-democracy protesters in Iran.

Anti-government protests in Iran are in their third month.

They were sparked by the death in police custody of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, who was detained for allegedly violating the Islamic Republic’s strict dress code.

The demonstrations have been repeatedly violently suppressed by the country’s security forces.

Iran executed a second prisoner last week convicted of crimes committed during the nationwide protests.

The execution of Majidreza Rahnavard came less than a month after he allegedly fatally stabbed two members of a paramilitary force.

Protesters in Montreal shouted “Femme Vie Liberté” and held signs that read “Stop Execution.”

One woman created a makeshift prison out of a cardboard box. On top of the display was a noose.

The demonstrators say they want to send a clear message to Iranians fighting for democracy that they are not alone.

Montrealers have protested several weekends in a row.

Last Saturday there was a global “Silence is Violence” march organized by the “Woman, Life, Freedom Movement and Solidarity Association.”
