Deadly collision on highway in Mirabel

By News Staff

A 46-year-old woman is dead following a head-on collision late Wednesday night on autoroute 50 in Mirabel.

The accident occurred around midnight when a car traveling westbound on A-50 deviated from its lane to collide head-on with another vehicle driven by a driver in his 40s and a passenger.

Mirabel firefighters were called to the scene to help get the victims out of the cars using a hydraulic rescue tool, also known as the jaws of life, and were then taken to hospital.

The 46-year-old passenger, from Saint-Jérôme, was transported to a hospital in critical condition where she later succumbed to her injuries. The driver suffered serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the oncoming car, a man in his 50s, remains in hospital with serious injuries as well, but will be seen by SQ investigators later when his health permits.

Autoroute 50 was closed in both directions throughout the night.

Sûreté du Québec investigators are on the site analyzing the scene and will try to determine the exact circumstances of the fatal collision. At first glance, alcohol and speed do not appear to have been factors.
