Quebec’s 911 dispatchers warn that staff shortages could endanger Quebecers’ lives

Quebec’s 911 medical dispatchers are sounding the alarm.

Their union, the Fédération des employés du préhospitalier du Quebec (FPHQ) says unfair working conditions, long hours and low pay are causing severe shortages of qualified personnel.

They are asking the Quebec government for a raise and more mental health resources.

They say staffing shortages are only creating even more difficult working conditions for current employees often forced to work overtime.

Video aiming to raise awareness

In an effort to raise awareness about how staffing shortages could impact Quebecers’ health, the union released a video last week.

In it, we see an older man suffering what appears to be a heart attack.

When a family member calls 911 — the phone remains unanswered.

The government has refused to comment while negotiations with the union are underway.
