The 21-year-old inmate who died after sustaining injuries at Bordeaux jail in Montreal was reportedly pepper sprayed by correctional officers.
According to Radio-Canada, Nicous D’Andre Spring was pepper sprayed when he was wearing a spit hood – a restraining device made of mesh that’s placed over a detainee’s face to prevent them from spitting or biting.
The Public Security Ministry has confirmed Spring, who was illegally detained at the jail, died the day after a physical intervention there on Dec. 24. He should have been set free the previous day.
On Dec. 29, a manager at Bordeaux was suspended from his duties – the second suspension involving an employee in connection with Spring’s death.
Quebec’s coroner’s officer and provincial police are investigating the circumstances of the death.
