Man found dead close to Canada-U.S. border near Roxham Road identified as a Montrealer

The Sûreté du Québec (SQ) has identified the man found dead Wednesday in Saint-Bernard-de-Lacolle as Fritznel Richard.

Authorities said in a press release that he was 44 years old and from Montreal.

“According to the investigation, Mr. Richard tried to reach a member of his family living in the United States and died during this unfortunate attempt. The victim showed no signs of violence and hypothermia appears to be the most likely cause of death.”

His body was found near an unofficial border crossing south of Montreal that is used by thousands of asylum seekers each year to cross into Canada from the United States, near Roxham Road.

The SQ says a coroner’s inquest is expected to be held to determine the precise cause(s) and circumstances surrounding Richard’s death.

“The man was sought by the Sûreté du Québec during the holiday season between December 27 and 29. The search ended on December 29 when information was received indicating that Mr. Richard had entered the United States.”
