Dollard-des-Ormeaux votes to maintain bilingual status

The City of Dollard-des-Ormeaux is asking the Quebec government to keep their bilingual status.

Tuesday, city council voted to adopt a resolution to maintain its bilingual status, after being informed on Dec. 12 that it would no longer meet the condition required by section 29.1 of the Charter of the French Language.

Since the adoption French Language Act, or Bill 96, some cities across the province have been given exceptional status to preserve their bilingualism.

“I am proud to lead a council that recognizes and celebrates the richness of having a bilingual and multilingual community. This process will allow Dollard-des-Ormeaux to maintain its bilingual status and continue to serve its residents in both official languages,” said Mayor Alex Bottausci in a statement

“It saddens me that this legal process must be invoked to protect the inherent right of our residents to receive communications in the language of their choice.”

With the vote, the City is looking to keep all aspects of municipal life in both French and English, something that has been done since 1978.
