Situation remains ‘precarious’ at Maisonneuve-Rosemont Hospital

By News Staff

The public is being asked to avoid the Maisonneuve-Rosemont hospital emergency room if their case is not urgent.

The regional health authority saying the situation remains precarious, even though the ER is operating under normal business hours.

They say, “we are in a situation of hour-to-hour management that remains difficult given the number of staff available at this time. We are working in collaboration with our partners in the Montreal network to provide the required assistance to our teams.”

The hospital is seeing an average of up to 60 patients per day in its emergency room – who they say could be treated by a family doctor or CLSC – which are not priority cases.

The CIUSS says to call 811 where a nurse can advise on the appropriate services to use.

This all comes just days after the ER at Maisonneuve-Rosemont was forced to close to new patients Monday night, when nurses threatened to quit en masse due to staffing shortages and forced overtime.

They say, “several nurses in the network have volunteered to come immediately to lend a hand to our teams for a few shifts in order to relieve our nurses. We would like to thank them for this great solidarity and we confirm that we will take all the help that will be offered to us from the experienced caregivers available, that is to say nurses, nursing assistants and orderlies.”

On Tuesday a mediator was appointed to help with the situation.
