Fleurdelisé: Quebec flag turns 75 years old

Quebec’s flag – the blue and white Fleurdelisé – celebrated a birthday Saturday, turning 75 years old.

On Jan. 21, 1948, a motion proposed by a member of the Quebec National Assembly received unanimous support.

Quebec’s new flag flew for the first time that day. It was the first Canadian province to adopt its own flag.

The Fleurdelisé uses four white fleurs-de-lis (French for lily), symbolizing purity. The blue field symbolizes the skies.

The Société Saint-Jean-Baptiste in Montréal held a short ceremony marking the 75th anniversary of the Fleurdelisé.

Meanwhile Quebec Premier François Legault celebrated the anniversary on social media.

“Our flag makes us proud to be Quebecers and it unites us, regardless of where we come from,” Legault tweeted.

“I’m inviting all Quebecers to celebrate this important anniversary.

“Let’s keep being proud of our flag and what it represents for us: a bridge between our past, present and future.”
