Quebec and the STM investing $565 million to improve service in Montreal’s metro, specifically to equip the blue line with a new train control system.

“The project aims to replace the current system with new control technology used to manage the spacing between trains, ensure speed control and ensure that track changes are made smoothly and safely. In concrete terms, for users, this change will improve train reliability, frequency and comfort during departures and stops,” said the provincial government in a press release.

The new system will be completed in 2028 for the existing blue line and in 2029 for the extension of the line – which is already underway and will see five more stations added going east to Anjou.

The STM is launching a call for tenders for the new system as of today.

The implementation of the system is financed mainly by the Quebec government ($296.6 million), with the participation of the Société de transport de Montréal (STM) ($65.6 million). An application for funding will be submitted to the federal government.

“This is further proof that our government is more committed than ever to the completion of the blue line extension. Investing in the maintenance and development of the Montréal metro means ensuring quality service for citizens and the sustainability of our infrastructure. The new train control system will make it possible to optimize the service offer. This is a strong gesture that we are making to support public transit in the metropolis and to increase sustainable mobility in the east end of Montreal,” said Geneviève Guilbault, Quebec Deputy Premier and Minister of Transport and Sustainable Mobility.

“The new train control system brings our metro system into the modern age. This essential element of the blue line extension will also allow us to develop a network that is ever more efficient and on the cutting edge of technology. This investment demonstrates the Québec government’s commitment to the development of Montreal’s public transit system. This support will be essential to ensure the survival of public transit companies in Quebec in the years to come,” added Valérie Plante, Mayor of Montreal.
