Quebec launches new platform to monitor province’s ER wait times

By News Staff

Quebecers will now be able to find out how long they’ll be waiting in emergency rooms, thanks to new data released by the government.

A new website will be updated continuously they say.

For each establishment, patients can find out the number of people in the emergency room or waiting to see a doctor, the average length of stay for a patient in the waiting room or on a stretcher. The public will also be able to find out the occupancy rate of stretchers.

It’s intended to help patients decide whether to go to the emergency room or an alternative – like their local CLSC or family doctor.

The data will be updated hourly, with the exception of the average length of stay, which will be updated daily.

In a few weeks, data on the average time to see a doctor in ERs and the wait time on the 811 telephone line will also be added.

Quebec’s health minister says he intends to introduce two bills by the end of February: one to create the Santé Québec agency and the other to regulate employment agencies – to help regulate the shifts agency workers will have access to.

The agency would coordinate the day-to-day management of the health network.
