Montreal firefighters are on the scene of a blaze in the city’s east end.
They issued a first alarm for a fire at a three-storey strip mall at Sherbrooke street east and Carignan Ave. around 7:45 a.m.
Montreal police quickly helped evacuate the building, as it houses apartments as well. About 20 families left out in the cold, but taken in by the Red Cross who is coordinating and helping.

Two officers required medical attention for smoke inhalation. They were treated onsite, but brought to hospital as a precaution.
A fifth alarm was sent about an hour later and people are being asked to avoid the area – the highest alarm level for the department. Which means about 100 firefighters have been called to the scene.
At least three businesses were heavily damaged by fire, smoke and water, as well as several apartments. Some families may not be able to return to their homes.
