PQ unveils candidate in for Saint-Henri-Sainte-Anne byelection

Parti Québécois leader Paul St-Pierre Plamondon introduced Andréanne Fiola, as candidate for the Saint-Henri-Sainte-Anne riding on Friday.

The 23-year-old holds a bachelor’s degree in environmental studies from l’Université de Sherbrooke and two certificates specializing in environmental issues. Fiola says she wants to raise awareness around environmental issues in Quebec.

“As a Quebecer, I am naturally concerned about environmental and climate issues, but also about the issue that has been pending for too long and that I believe is intimately linked to our ability to address the climate challenge here, and that is, of course, Quebec independence,” said Fiola.

On Monday the Quebec government called the byelection in the Montreal riding of Saint-Henri-Sainte-Anne after the seat was left empty when former Dominique Anglade stepped down from her role as Liberal leader last December. Voters for the riding will go to the polls to choose their new MNA on March 13.

Fiola had previously been a candidate in the 2017 and 2021 municipal elections and then for the PQ in the 2022 provincial election.

“Her education, her professional background and her solid experience in politics make her the ideal candidate to carry out our project, whether on the environment, the increase in the cost of living or access to affordable housing,” said St-Pierre Plamondon.

In a press release, the Canadian Party of Quebec (CaPQ) introduced their candidate: Ian Denman, a bilingual engineer and “life-long Montrealer.”

In the statement, CaPQ leader Colin Standish criticized the Liberals for having “failed to provide a real voice of opposition” in the National Assembly and called the residents of Saint-Henri-Sainte-Anne to elect Denman who he described as “dedicated to a united Canada where bilingualism and equal rights are the pillars of our society.”

Fiola and Denman will face Québec solidaire candidate and immigration lawyer Guillaume Cliche-Rivard, who finished second to Anglade in October in Saint-Henri-Sainte-Anne riding. The Liberal party announced its candidate for the riding will be the Christopher Baenninger while Victor Pelletier will be running for the CAQ.

The Quebec Conservative Party has yet to announce its candidate.
