Quebec Conservative Leader Eric Duhaime introduced Lucien Koty as the party’s candidate for the Saint-Henri—Sainte-Anne byelection on Sunday.
Last week the Quebec government called the byelection in the Montreal riding after the seat was left empty when former Dominique Anglade stepped down from her role as Liberal leader last December.
Voters for the riding will go to the polls to choose their new MNA on March 13.
The 59-year-old Koty, originally from Dasso in Benin, moved to Montreal 30 years ago.
“He came here because he loves our heritage, our cultural richness, but also the democracy, the civic rights and our democracy here in Quebec,” Duhaime said at a press conference Sunday introducing his candidate. “And that’s one of the reasons why he moved to Quebec. He chose Quebec and what he saw over the last few months was not very good. It was not the Quebec that he chose.”

Koty ran in the 2022 provincial election for the Conservatives in the riding of Verdun. He finished fifth with 1,664 votes – five per cent.
“I am entering politics because the convictions and the human and societal values that drive me have been profoundly affected since the onset of the major global crisis that is COVID,” said Koty. “In effect, my basic rights and freedoms are no longer being respected.
“The only party that can put Quebec back on the right track, improving health care, reinvigorating our economy, and protecting our environment without forgetting our social lives, is and remains the Conservative Party of Quebec.”
Koty holds a Bachelor’s degree in science and technology from the University of Benin and a Master’s degree in operations research from Montreal’s École Polytechnique.
Christopher Baenninger is the candidate for the Quebec Liberals while Andréanne Fiola will represent the Parti Québécois.
