Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante announced her father’s death early Sunday afternoon, paying tribute to him in an Instagram post in which she shared family pictures.

She said Gaétan Plante’s health was “fragile” for the last year.

“A father is a daughter’s first love,” she wrote. “Mine always believed in me. He showed me that you can dream and reach your goals when you put your heart into your work. I have in my blood the same strong will that he had.”

In the moving tribute, the mayor recalled how her father had supported her throughout her life and career.

“When I entered politics, taking my dad with me door-to-door or better yet, to a home for the elderly, was an instant success,” her post continued. “The ladies were all for this handsome, well-dressed, perfumed man who made them laugh and gossip.”

Mayor Plante reminisced about her childhood memories with him, and looked ahead to the healing process.

“I realized yesterday that no one would ever answer me again when I said ‘daddy’. The shock was brutal. Now begins the long learning process of moving forward, laughing and crying, without him in our lives.”
