Québec solidaire wants to make it illegal to evict a tenant in favour of an Airbnb

By The Canadian Press

Québec solidaire believes it is no longer tolerable to let landlords evict tenants in order to convert their dwellings into an Airbnb, especially in the midst of a housing crisis.

QS co-spokesperson Gabriel Nadeau-Dubois is asking the François Legault government to proceed quickly with a simple amendment to the Civil Code that would prohibit evictions for the purpose of conversion into tourist accommodation.

Wednesday in Montreal, Nadeau-Dubois was in the company of two tenants who are threatened with eviction from housing they occupy, one for 25 years, the other for 22 years.

Québec solidaire argues the province has lost 116,000 affordable housing units, including 90,000 in Montreal in recent years. QS says although the losses are not all attributable to the conversion to tourist accommodation, it seriously aggravates the current housing crisis.

Nadeau-Dubois says it is inconceivable that these evictions are still legal, as the tenants in question are most often unable to find comparable accommodation at the same price.
