Three stabbed to death in Rosemont-La-Petite-Patrie; Montreal police arrest suspect

“I am trembling right now," says Diane Routhier, a resident of Montreal's Rosemont, where three people were fatally stabbed in an apartment building Friday morning. A suspect was arrested soon after. Alyssia Rubertucci reports.

Three people were found stabbed to death in an apartment building in Montreal’s Rosemont-La-Petite-Patrie Friday morning and a suspect has been arrested.

The Montreal police force saying the 911 call came in around 9:20 a.m.

“We received an unknown call for person in need in a building on Bélanger street, near Viau street in Rosemont-La-Petite-Patrie borough,” said SPVM spokesperson Julien Lévesque, on the scene. “When police officers arrived onsite they located three victims of a suspicious death. The bodies have some violence marks possibly perpetrated by a sharp object.”

“Onsite one person have been arrested by police officers, and will be met by the investigators later on.”

Police saying it’s too early to give more information on the suspect or the victims. They would not confirm if there is a relationship link between them, but multiple media outlets report that all four people involved are related.

Quebec Premier François Legault and Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante taking to Twitter to share their condolences.

“Now I’m in shock by the event. I know a person who lives there,” said Diane Routhier who has a friend that lives in the building. Adding that the person was also in shock and couldn’t speak as they heard the attack. “I am trembling right now.”

“Be careful…Three things happened earlier Amqui [truck attack], Laval in Sainte-Rose [daycare attack], and now in Rosemont. I can’t believe what happened here in Rosemont, because I live there since I am 24 years old. And I never saw a thing like that. And ever. And never saw that. I don’t know what happened.”

“I know it was a triple murder, but I’m kind of scared,” said Emilio Caceres Carmona who lives near the scene. “But, you know, it is what it is. I can’t do anything about it.”

Although it’s still unclear what exactly happened or led to this tragedy, many are speaking out about more resources for mental health.

Vincent Marissal, Québec solidaire member for Rosemont, said, “It’s all over Montreal right now. That’s why we have to stay focused on the solution…My role is is to support the population and to make sure that we have all the tools to prevent violent incidents like this,” adding that mental health is a big issue in our society. “There’s no doubt that many people are in distress in our society, and we have to make sure that we put all the resources we can to help these people, just to make sure that we don’t go that far in violent incident.”

Richard Frigon had a meeting in the area and saw the scene, saying the violence seems to be happening everywhere. “These people need some help,” referring to what may have possibly happened in Rosemont, and the incident in Amqui earlier this week.
