Man facing armed assault charges after break-in at downtown Montreal mosque

By News Staff

The suspect charged after a violent break-in at a downtown Montreal mosque was in court Wednesday.

Cory Anderson, 32, was accused of armed assault, false imprisonment and mischief.

Security camera footage shows a man seemingly breaking into the front entrance of the Al Oumma mosque with worshippers inside during morning prayers early Sunday around 5 a.m. – amid Ramadan.

Montreal police were called to the mosque on Saint-Dominique Street; they arrested the suspect not far from the scene.

SPVM had said on Monday this is not being treated as a hate crime. On Wednesday police clarified their investigation could not determine the suspect’s motive and they cannot confirm if it was hate-related or not.

Hate crime investigators continue to be part of the case as it occurred in a place of worship.

Anderson is due back in court Thursday and remains detained.
