Man dies after vehicle veers off road, plunges into St. Lawrence in Boucherville

BOUCHERVILLE – A man in his 30s died Friday morning after his vehicle veered off the road in Boucherville, before plunging into the St. Lawrence River.

The Service de police de l’agglomération de Longueuil (SPAL) were notified at approximately 3:20 a.m. that the eastbound car had gone off the road on Marie-Victorin Boulevard.

Upon arrival, SPAL police officers could not approach the vehicle in the water. They called in the municipal fire department to help remove the man from the vehicle.

The man was then transported to hospital where he died shortly later.

A section of Marie-Victorin Boulevard was closed to traffic so that investigators could reconstruct the events. Brake marks on the roadway appear to be related to the car that fell into the water.

“At the moment in the investigation we are open to every possibility that could explain what happened. From what we know the person was alone in the car so that’s why there is no search in the river,” explained Ghyslain Vallières, a spokesperson for the SPAL.

Police are asking anyone who may have information to contact 911.

“If you have a camera and live in Boucherville near De Montarville and Marie-Victorin please call 911 and we will go see if we can have something from your camera that maybe saw something,” Vallières added.
