Filmmaker Xavier Dolan and lawyer Anne-France Goldwater are among the public figures supporting the Montreal SPCA’s push for more regulation for the welfare of farm animals in the province.
The Montreal SPCA issued a manifesto Tuesday calling for a regulatory framework governing the animals’ living condition in Quebec.
The manifesto received more than 400 signatures by Tuesday morning.
Among them were nearly 40 Quebec public figures, including Dolan and Goldwater. Other signatories were politician Françoise David, TV host
Julie Snyder, actress Marie-Ève Trudel and singer-songwriter Paul Piché.
“While 92 per cent of Quebecers believe that a law or regulation should govern the treatment of animals raised for food on Quebec farms, this is currently not the case,” the Montreal SPCA wrote.

“To date, cows, chickens, pigs and other farm animals are denied the basic protections afforded under the Animal Welfare and Safety Act.
“It is more than time, in 2023, to do better to protect all animals in Quebec.”
The SPCA says the basic welfare of farm animals raised for food production must be guaranteed by the province.
“It is therefore necessary for the interests and needs of all animals to inform the way we treat them, whether they end up sleeping on our couch or are bound for our plate,” the group’s manifesto reads.
