About 200 residents forced to move from Floralies long-term care homes

MONTREAL – About 200 vulnerable residents are being forced to leave two private residential and long-term care centers (CHSLDs) in southwest Montreal that were placed under trusteeship last fall following allegations of abuse.
The Centre intégré universitaire de santé et de services sociaux (CIUSSS) de l’Ouest-de-l’Île-de-Montréal has confirmed that all patients at the Floralies residences, located in the boroughs of Lachine and LaSalle, will be relocated for health and safety reasons.
A report by a retired manager from the Ministry of Health, made public last fall, mentions “all forms of abuse” in these CHSLDs, including violence and negligence on the part of some employees.

The two residences were placed under trusteeship on September 1, 2022, shortly after an outbreak of streptococcus A killed six people last summer.
The CIUSSS de l’Ouest-de-l’Île-de-Montréal is temporarily administering these facilities following allegations of abuse. In a statement Monday, the organization said the overall situation in these facilities has been stabilized since last fall.
“However, in order to ensure the well-being, health and safety of residents in the long term, we have decided to move all residents to other living environments,” said Jean-François Miron, assistant director general of CIUSSS de l’Ouest-de-l’Île-de-Montréal and interim administrator of Les Floralies.
Les Floralies residences said they were shocked by the news and are concerned about the impact the move will have on residents.
