Greater Montreal drivers will pay more annually to register passenger vehicles

By News Staff

Owners of vehicles registered in the greater Montreal area will be paying more for registration tax next year – going from $45 to $59 as of January 1, 2024 – which will be implemented by the SAAQ.

The Montreal Metropolitain Community (CMM) will be permitted to collect the payments – which they say is expected to raise more than $125 million per year to help finance public transit in the region through the Autorité régionale de transport métropolitain (ARTM).

A modified bylaw passed by the CMM on Thursday makes this agreement with the SAAQ possible.

The modification will apply not only to the registration tax of passenger vehicles in greater Montreal – but also in Saint-Jerome.

The CMM acts as a planning and finance coordination body for 82 municipalities.
