Risk of collapse: dozens evacuated from 3 buildings in Rosemont—La Petite Patrie

By The Canadian Press

Three residential buildings that were showing possible signs of collapse had to be evacuated as a precaution in the borough of Rosemont—La Petite-Patrie on Saturday.

Roughly 30 to 40 people needed to be evacuated from 15 housing units on de Lorimier Avenue near Holt Street.

The Montreal Fire Department says a call came in at 12:17 p.m. alerting them to possible signs of collapse.

Prevention chief Kevin Francoeur says the decision to evacuate was a “precautionary measure.”

No injuries have been reported.

“The building owner is responsible for the safety and maintenance of his building,” said Francoeur. “He’s cooperating with the authorities and is sending an engineer on site to assess the structure.”

The three buildings are three-storey quintuplexes built in the 1920s.

Avenue de Lorimier was temporarily closed to traffic between Holt Street and des Carrières Street.
