MONTREAL _ The father of the five-month-old baby who was the subject of an Amber Alert Tuesday afternoon in Montreal has been arrested for kidnapping and taken to a detention center.
An Amber Alert was issued for a short time Tuesday afternoon to locate the infant, who was eventually found “safe and sound” by the Montreal police force (SPVM).
Shortly before 5 p.m., an alert was sent to cell phones and broadcast in the media. The message stated that a five-month-old child had been abducted in the early afternoon in Montreal by a man.
Less than 20 minutes after the special protocol for finding abducted children was activated, Montreal police confirmed that the baby had been found, as had the suspect.
The suspect, a 34-year-old man, was arrested for abduction by police and transported to a detention center, where he will be met by investigators.
In the early evening Tuesday, a police spokeswoman, Véronique Dubuc, said that the SPVM had been called to “assist the youth protection workers to validate the safety of a five-month-old baby under the responsibility of the father and mother.”
During an intervention around 1:45 p.m. on Monk Boulevard, near de la Vérendrye Boulevard, in the Sud-Ouest Borough, the father fled with the child.
Dubuc said authorities had reason to fear for the child’s health and imminent safety. The SPVM’s major crimes team took over the investigation and an Amber Alert was issued around 5 p.m.
“Ten minutes later, officers conducted a check at the address of an acquaintance of the suspect. The child and the suspect were there,” the spokeswoman added.
While the baby appeared to be in good health, he was taken to a hospital to make sure, she said.
