Notre-Dame-des Neiges Cemetery will reopen for Mother’s Day

Montreal’s Notre-Dame-des Neiges Cemetery will be open on Mother’s Day despite an ongoing labour dispute.

The cemetery will be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, a cemetery spokesperson said in a news press release.

The cemetery has been mostly closed since workers went on strike in January.

Canada’s largest cemetery recently reopened at the end of March to families paying their respects.

It was closed again in April following ice storm damages and a lack of staff to help clean up fallen branches.

Headstones were destroyed and some of the paths were blocked by trees and branches.

The cemetery is asking visitors to be careful when visiting on Sunday.

The union and management are at an impasse in negotiations; workers have been without a contract since 2017.
