Massive traffic delays on a Montreal highway caused one family to miss their flight and rack up an expensive taxi bill.

The family was caught up in traffic for over three and a half hours to get to the Montreal-Trudeau Airport Saturday afternoon.

The massive traffic delay was caused by a construction along the Highway 20.

“The closure of Highway 20 West is necessary because of the concrete work on the ramp that passes over it. Therefore, for safety reasons, we must close Highway 20 westbound for the entire long weekend,” said Martin Girard, spokesman for the Ministry of Transport.

The ramp leading from Route 138 to Highway 20 West caused a huge traffic jam from the airport to downtown.

For the family — one of the many that were caught in the traffic jam — the trip from their house to the airport should have taken 20 minutes, not three and a half hours.

In addition, their taxi bill which is normally around $50, ended up being $216.

Despite missing their flight, the family was able to get another flight without having to pay for a new ticket.

Other on the highway caught up in the traffic jam could be seen getting out of their car for a cigarette break.

Some even opted to try and get to their destination on foot.
