After three years of major modernization work, the City of Montreal inaugurated the Gary-Carter baseball stadium, in Ahuntsic Park. The stadium will also feature new bleachers capable of seating 1,000 spectators.
“This major transformation responds to the needs of residents, as well as elite and local baseball teams, by providing players and spectators with top-quality facilities,” said the city in a press release.
Valued at $10 million, the work began in fall 2021 and was completed on schedule in spring 2023.
“The modernization of Gary Carter Stadium is excellent news for the borough of Ahuntsic-Cartierville. Thanks to this magnificent stadium, we will be able to host a large number of sporting events […]. The new field has been designed so that teams of all levels can benefit from this extraordinary stadium in the heart of the borough. I’m already looking forward to seeing the young players of the Ahuntsic-Cartierville Baseball Association play on this field, while being inspired by the players of the Montreal Orioles,” said Émilie Thuillier, Mayor of the Ahuntsic-Cartierville borough.
A new synthetic surface, made from a natural infill material that generates less heat than previous generations, helped ensure the transformations of the facilities met today’s environmental requirements. “In addition, LED lighting has been installed, limiting energy consumption and nuisance around the pitch, and protective netting has been installed around the perimeter, considerably reducing the risk of accidents around the pitch.”
“Montreal is a sports city par excellence. The quality and accessibility of its facilities for the entire Montreal population plays a major role in this. This is why we have chosen to invest in improving the condition and quality of the city’s recreational and sports infrastructures. The Gary Carter stadium is an excellent example of this commitment, which will enable us to consolidate the network of parks and municipal infrastructures, in order to encourage physical activity among citizens by making it more accessible,” says Caroline Bourgeois, Vice-president of the city’s executive committee and responsible for sports.
