Héma-Québec calling for blood donations before summer slowdown

MONTREAL – To mark National Blood Donor Week, Héma-Québec is launching an appeal to donors to replenish its reserves before the summer period, when blood donations are usually lower.
The awareness week, which runs from June 12 to 18, aims to remind citizens of the importance of donating blood all year round.
“It’s easy to forget to do your civic duty,” says Patrice Lavoie, Director of Public Relations at Héma-Québec.
The organization is particularly in need of blood donations from people whose blood type is O-negative, since it is a universal donor. However, Lavoie reiterates that Héma-Québec is looking for all types of donors, and that every donation is important.
“At present, reserves are at a satisfactory level. That said, we’re seeing a slight slowdown in the number of appointments for donations. We’re asking people to donate blood, plasma and platelets,” says Lavoie.
He reminds us that donating blood is quite quick. It takes about 20 minutes to donate blood, and 30 to 45 minutes to donate plasma.
Patrice Lavoie appeals to new donors, telling them to try the experience with a loved one who has already donated. “If you are a donor, bring someone from your family or friends,” he adds.
It is possible to make an appointment online at a permanent donation center, and several mobile clinics will also be held in the coming weeks.
Héma-Québec distributes nearly 1,000 blood donations every day in Quebec hospitals, according to the organization.
